About the Team:

William Blair Investment Management’s data governance team is responsible for strategic technology initiatives surrounding the use of fundamental and quantitative data throughout the investment process. The functions of this team include, but are not limited to: defining, capturing and verifying data requirements in collaboration with data consumers; ensuring all data is consistently defined, aligned to business concepts and captured as metadata.  The team also coordinates across functions to define and implement data usage and lineage, SLA’s and data retention policies. 

Job Summary & Responsibilities:

This full-time internship will look at how we manage data and how we can transform data into usable insights for our quantitative team. This will be based in Chicago. Training will include functional understanding of the various business and operational units within WB, the population and use of metadata within our data dictionary, functional use of Bloomberg, Factset and internal data stores, and the creation and support of semantic rules for the validation of security related reference data.
  • Asses and validate data maintained in various analytic reporting applications, through ongoing quality controls.  Utilize efficient validation process to ensure data accuracy. 
  • Assist data governance team with gathering knowledge from different business units, categorizing such information into data that is usable and accessible, and investigating discrepancies.
  • Assist in the creation and implementation of governance policies and procedures.
  • Maintain the data dictionary.
  • Conduct research to supplement various data elements.
  • Complete data entry requests to support team’s daily activity.
  • Participate in other projects as requested by management.


  • Must have completed a minimum of two years of college and be currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or other related field.  Minimum GPA of 3.5 highly preferred. 
  • General understanding of key financial concepts including financial accounting, investment statistics,  equity markets, and quantitative investing
  • Technical aptitude for systems/software applications.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite of applications. Advanced Excel skills required.
  • Familiarity with SQL scripting, R and database architecture preferred.
  • Delivers clear, effective communication and commits to understanding others.
  • Adaptability to a constantly changing environment and ability to manage through change with a high degree of emotional maturity.
  • Highly motivated, detail oriented, and a team player.
