About the Team:

William Blair’s buy-side research team is responsible for identifying quality growth companies that will generate above-average results for clients over time with generally less risk than the market. The team identifies these companies through a combination of rigorous fundamental research and systematic inputs, following a disciplined process that emphasizes team collaboration.

Job Summary & Responsibilities:

The intern will assist with a project involving analysis of large data sets to help uncover relationships between certain events and equity valuations for our fundamental research team. The intern’s work will be focused on independently gathering and analyzing data and reporting on the results of his/her findings to investment professionals. The intern will have access to WorldScope, IBES, FactSet, Compustat and other third party data source vendors as required. 

The full-time internship will be based in Chicago and is expected to begin in March, lasting through the summer with possibility to extend. Training will include introduction to William Blair’s IM research process and William Blair’s investment philosophy. The internship will allow the intern the opportunity to experience the application of data science and statistical techniques in a financial context using real market data. We also expect the opportunity will assist the student in:
  • Gaining basic understanding of gathering business requirements through staff interviews and other data collection methods, perform analysis, document process flows, track projects, and develop reports. 
  • Clearly and concisely communicating with equity analysts and associates. 
  • Understanding of the investment management business, securities industry and business operations.


  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Must be pursuing a graduate degree, preferably in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or Master in Business Administration. 
  • Must have advanced knowledge of R, Python, database technologies, ETL techniques, and MS Excel. 
  • Must be comfortable pre-processing (cleaning, normalizing, etc.) and analyzing large/complicated datasets. 
  • Must have experience in the application of advanced statistical methods and time series analysis.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure and common AI platforms (Amazon, Google, etc.) or other similar technologies are a strong plus. 
  • Adaptability to a constantly changing environment and ability to manage through change with a high degree of emotional maturity.
  • Highly motivated, detail oriented, and team player, with exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
