Private Wealth Management’s financial advisors work with high-net-worth individuals and their families, business owners, endowments, and foundations to provide quality investment advice and thoughtful wealth management solutions.  Advisors rely on the global resources and services of the firm, including William Blair’s renowned equity research, wealth planning services, and consulting services group, to help their clients achieve their goals, strengthen their legacies, and enrich their communities. The average tenure of a wealth advisor at William Blair is 15 years with the firm and 24 years in the industry which is a testament to the stability of our firm and our people. As of March 31, 2018, William Blair Private Wealth Management oversees $32.4 billion in client assets.  In addition to the Chicago-based office, there are private wealth management offices in Atlanta, Boston, New York, and San Francisco. 

Job Summary & Responsibilities:

  • Identify private investor prospects, market the firm’s financial services and convert prospects to clients with assets under supervision.
  • Partner with senior advisor to assess functions of the business in an effort to identify areas of opportunity to continuously elevate and grow the business, which includes gathering assets, creating a value proposition for marketing, introducing financial planning and portfolio management. 
  • Develop and service existing client relationships, monitor clients’ investment objectives on an ongoing basis, work to win additional available assets under supervision, communicate value of their William Blair relationship.
  • Strong understanding of firm’s proprietary research as well as other resources.  Regular attendance at research meetings, management and corporate finance presentations and growth stock conference for relevance to the existing private client book (as well as new business opportunity pertinent to the book).
  • Conduct independent research and analysis on equities, fixed income, mutual funds, and alternative assets. Make recommendations based on research, to lead advisor, in order to build suitable portfolios that are consistent with client’s objectives and positioned to preserve and enhance client assets.  Monitor results and refine strategy as needed.  Operate with the highest professional standards putting clients’ interests first and in compliance with regulatory and firm requirements.


  • Comprehensive knowledge of investment products.  Portfolio management experience preferred
  • Superior sales, presentation and communication skills with a commitment to satisfying customers
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and high level of self-motivation
  • Thorough knowledge of compliance regulations associated with investment products
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • CFA and CFP preferred
  • 3-5 years sales experience preferred
  • High quality regulatory compliance record
  • Wealth management and financial planning experience preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge of investment products. 
  • • SIE Exam, Series 7, and Series 63/65 (or 66) must be obtained within 150 days of employment
