The Fixed Income group makes markets in high yield and investment grade bonds, preferred stock, and asset-backed securities.  The group serves institutional investors, including hedge funds, asset managers, and insurance company investors, in the U.S. and Europe.

Job Summary & Responsibilities:

William Blair is seeking an experienced Fixed Income Desk Analyst (3-5 years of experience) to join its rapidly growing Fixed Income Sales & Trading team. The Analyst will help contribute by providing market commentary and fundamental corporate bond analysis to the Investment Grade and High Yield Corporate Bonds Sales force and to William Blair’s buy-side clients. The successful candidate will exhibit an ability to successfully make buy and sell recommendations based on relative value, corporate structure arb, event driven or fundamental analysis through written or verbal communication.

The Desk Analyst will be required to make active and ongoing recommendations in both investment-grade and high-yield corporate debt to our experienced traders and institutional salespeople to help provide market liquidity and facilitate institutional trading of taxable debt securities. 

The Desk Analyst will be able to organically formulate an opinion on select issuers within their coverage universe. The successful candidate should have strong verbal and written communication skills to convey trading ideas to the sales force and to William Blair’s buy-side clients. The Desk Analyst must have the ability to quickly understand first time corporate debt issuers that are formulated from William Blair’s high yield new issue offerings. 

Additionally, we are seeking an individual with a high level of passion for the corporate bond market with an enthusiasm for investing and who wants to contribute quickly in a fast paced sales & trading environment.


  • Minimum of three years’ experience as a Buy-Side/Sell-Side Research Associate or Investment Banking Analyst / Associate with formal bank credit training.
  • MBA from top-tiered business school and/or CFA preferred, bachelor degree required.
  • Strong financial modeling skills required.  Ability to develop financial projections and enterprise valuations based on discounted FCF and EBITDA multiples; creating debt capital markets summary focusing on analyzing and reporting key trends in the high yield and Investment Grade industries in their coverage universe.
  • Experience analyzing financial statements and related data to assess historical financial performance and future outlook for client companies and prospects.
  • Experience looking at debt documents and analyzing debt covenants.
  • Outstanding leadership skills; track record of success and high performance.
  • Series 7 and 63 licenses required within 90 days of hire.
  • Committed to satisfying internal and external customers.
  • Ability to manage expectations of the Sales force and clients while working on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication, writing, verbal and computer skills.
