About the Team:

William Blair Investment Management’s institutional business development team is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with investment consultants and institutional plan sponsors globally. The team’s ultimate goal is to help clients and their respective consultants fulfill their investment objectives for their beneficiaries within the confines of their investment policy statements. The dedicated employees in these positions are experienced investment professionals, many with advanced degrees and/or CFAs. They effectively represent our firm and explain our institutional investment capabilities globally to prospective clients and consultants.

Job Summary & Responsibilities:

Responsible for sales initiatives of William Blair’s institutional products.  Maintain relationships with pension consultants, other managers in the investment industry and with internal staff to surface potential clients and ensure client needs are met. Leverage strong product knowledge and developing negotiation skills to support closing deals.  Collaborate with senior institutional business development representatives and share knowledge and experience with junior staff in institutional products and sales. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
  • Obtain visibility and build relationships with pension consultants and institutional investors in the assigned region to provide accurate, current knowledge of William Blair’s institutional products and services, and their associated benefits.
  • Work to leverage relationships and identify prospects which surface new business opportunities.
  • Develop new business opportunities, playing an active role in new business meetings and throughout the RFP process. 
  • Apply strong networking and negotiation skills to close sales to institutional accounts.
  • Leverage relationships within William Blair that can help surface leads or provide endorsements with target clients.  
  • Mentor junior staff on identifying and expanding sales opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain broad and deep expertise of all institutional account products and serve as a technical resource to others.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or Finance required.
  • MBA and/or CFA preferred.
  • 5-7 years of sales experience required.
  • Series 7 and 66 (or 63 and 65) licenses required or must be obtained within 90 days of start date.
  • Strong sales skills and in-depth product knowledge.
  • Significant understanding of the investment business and the firm’s products and services.
  • Stature and experience needed to cover the large prospects and/or accounts.
  • Works cooperatively with others to accomplish goals.
  • Strong leadership and coaching skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
