About Leveraged Finance 
William Blair’s Leveraged Finance Group arranges all manner of leveraged financing structures including 1st and 2nd lien debt, mezzanine financing, unitranche loans and high yield bonds and is focused on middle-market.  The private equity community is a prime constituent for the Leverage Finance Group.  

The Leveraged Finance Group works closely with each of Blair’s industry sector teams as well as our Financial Sponsor Coverage Group in serving the financing needs of the firm’s investment banking clients. The position will be based in the firm's Chicago headquarters or our New York office.

Job Summary & Responsibilities:

William Blair is seeking an experienced Investment Banking Associate (1st or 2nd year Associate level commensurate with experience) to join the Leveraged Finance Group.  Our focus on the middle-market and the extensive range of leveraged financings we arrange afford Associates the unique opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of and expertise in all manner of leveraged financing structures including 1st and 2nd lien debt, mezzanine financing, unitranche loans and high yield bonds. 

In addition, Associates work directly with senior-level client executives and top-level bankers in small deal team settings. Associates assume a critical role in the entire transaction process, including the initial pitch, due diligence, complex financial modeling and analysis, preparing offering memorandums/road show materials, meeting potential lenders/investors, and closing the financing.  Associates at William Blair & Company generally have MBA degrees and can demonstrate strong evidence of academic and professional achievement in previous endeavors. Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three years of experience as an Analyst or one year as an Associate in leveraged lending or high yield financing, investment banking or private  equity 
  • MBA from top-tiered business school preferred, bachelor degree required
  • Strong financial modeling skills required.  Build detailed, fully-integrated financial models to construct financial projections and test their feasibility, analyze the impact of proposed transactions on capital structures, cash flows, debt service requirements, compliance with and financial covenants, and differences in GAAP and tax treatments, etc.
  • Experience analyzing financial statements and related data to assess historical financial performance and future outlook for client companies and prospects
  • Outstanding leadership skills; track record of success and high performance
  • Series 79 and 63 licenses required within 90 days of hire 
  • Committed to satisfying internal and external customers
  • Ability to manage expectations of senior bankers, other deal team members and clients while working on multiple projects simultaneously 
  • Excellent mathematical, writing, verbal and computer skills
