About the Team:

William Blair Investment Management’s institutional business development team is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with investment consultants and institutional plan sponsors globally. The team’s ultimate goal is to help clients and their respective consultants fulfill their investment objectives for their beneficiaries within the confines of their investment policy statements. The dedicated employees in these positions are experienced investment professionals, many with advanced degrees and/or CFAs. They effectively represent our firm and explain our institutional investment capabilities globally to prospective clients and consultants.

Job Summary & Responsibilities:

Responsible for sales initiatives of William Blair’s institutional strategies in the west territory.  Maintain relationships with pension consultants, other managers in the investment industry and with internal staff to surface potential clients and ensure client needs are met. Leverage strong product knowledge and relationships to support closing deals.  Collaborate with senior institutional business development representatives and share knowledge and experience with junior staff in institutional strategies and external market trends. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
  • Obtain visibility and build relationships with pension consultants and institutional investors in the assigned region to provide accurate, current knowledge of William Blair’s institutional strategies and services, and their associated benefits.
  • Work to leverage relationships and identify prospects which surface new business opportunities.
  • Develop new business opportunities, playing an active role in new business meetings and throughout the RFP process. 
  • Apply strong networking skills to source new business opportunities.
  • Leverage relationships within William Blair that can help surface leads or provide endorsements with target clients.  
  • Mentor junior staff on identifying and expanding sales opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain broad and deep expertise of all institutional strategies and serve as a technical resource to others.


  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • MBA and/or CFA preferred.
  • 5-7 years of experience required in business development or consultant relations.
  • Series 7 and 66 (or 63 and 65) licenses required or must be obtained within 90 days of start date.
  • Consultative sales skills and in-depth industry knowledge.
  • Significant understanding of the investment business and the firm’s strategies.
  • Works cooperatively with others to accomplish goals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
